Shaw, DC Moving Company

Shaw runs from 1890s Victorian row houses to brand-new condo buildings, sometimes on the same block off 7th Street and the U Street corridor. The older houses have steep, original staircases; the new buildings have COIs and elevator windows. We ask which you are in on the phone and plan the two very differently, plus we watch for the construction and street closures that come with a neighborhood still filling in.

Written quote the same day

Tell us the rooms, the stairs and the parking, and the flat number comes back in writing.

Flat rate, nothing added later

Blankets, shrink wrap and tape are in the number. Nothing is re-priced once the truck is loaded.

Packing, full or partial

Dish barrels for kitchens, wardrobe cartons for closets, crates for glass and stone tops.

One crew lead, start to finish

The same person who surveys your home runs the load-out and the walkthrough at the end.

Century-old row houses next to brand-new condos, sometimes on one block — we plan each differently.

What makes a Shaw move tricky

  • Old houses: narrow stair turns
  • New buildings: elevator booking and paperwork
  • Construction and street closures are common

Typical Shaw flat rates

Home size Crew Typical flat rate
Studio / 1-bedroom 2 movers $490–$720
2-bedroom 2–3 movers $780–$1,250

Three things that speed up move day

  • Send a photo of your staircase if it turns
  • In a new building, ask if the freight elevator needs a deposit
  • Pack the kitchen last, unpack it first

“Kevin worked with us on a really tight last-minute date and still got a truck out to us the next morning. Quick, polite, careful with the antiques. Highly recommend.”

“Hector and his partner were efficient, respectful and genuinely professional. Moved a heavy sleeper sofa down a tight turn without a mark. We really appreciated the care.”

“Booked them for a fourth-floor walk-up with no elevator and honestly expected a disaster. Three guys, done in under four hours, not a scuff on the stairwell. Worth every dollar.”

Moving to Shaw — common questions

My Shaw condo needs board approval and insurance paperwork before I can move. Can you take care of it?
Yes — Grace does this on nearly every condo here. We issue the certificate of insurance to your board's exact wording, coordinate the move-in or move-out approval with the managing agent, and lock the elevator reservation, all well ahead of your date so nothing stalls at the door.
How does 7th Street and U Street traffic factor into my move timing?
We start ahead of it. Kevin sets the crew on your block early, before the U Street corridor fills up and the delivery trucks double-park, and pulls a DDOT no-parking permit so the truck holds its spot. Your flat number does not move if the street does.
I have an 1890s Victorian row house in Shaw with original hardwood and a steep old staircase. Can you protect it?
That is most of what we move here. We run cardboard and floor runners over the hardwood, pad the banister and the newel post, and walk heavy pieces down slowly rather than pivoting them on the turn. Anything that will not clear the staircase comes apart first and gets rebuilt upstairs.
How it actually goes

See How We Work

  1. 1

Free quote — about 10 minutes

We handle: We ask room count, stairs or elevator, and where the truck can legally park, then send a flat written price.

What helps most: Have your building’s COI rules and elevator hours handy — it makes the number exact instead of a guess.

  2. 2

We lock the date, permits and elevator

We handle: We reserve the freight elevator and pull a DDOT temporary no-parking permit so the truck sits at your door, not three blocks away.

What helps most: Confirm your move-out and move-in windows with both buildings, then tell us the tighter one.

  3. 3

    Pack & protect

We handle: Blanket-wrap on every piece of furniture, shrink-wrap on upholstery, beds and table legs disassembled and bagged with their hardware.

What helps most: Label boxes by the room they go to, and keep documents, keys and small valuables with you, not on the truck.

  4. 4

Load, drive, place & walk through

We handle: The same crew that loads is the crew that unloads — furniture goes where you point, beds get rebuilt, packing debris leaves with us.

What helps most: Do the final walkthrough with the crew lead before we pull away, while everything can still be adjusted for free.
